Vocabulary word: Observation
Observation of human behavior is important to fit in, the alien noted thus he decided to spend his time sitting in the park and watching how humans act.

 Vocabulary word: Emphasize

Make-up to emphasize the eyes

Good speakers use structural patterns, such as repetition, to emphasize, or give importance to, their message. 

Vocabulary word: Reactions
A whole range of reactions, from whining and complaining to laughter, could be observed from the students when they heard of extra homework.

She struggled to define the word to her foreign friend as she has yet to know what it meant.

Vocabulary word: Tersely
 Their teacher tersely explained the assignment to not waste the students' in-class working time.

Vocabulary word: Breach

A breach in the dam

The man knew that he could escape from prison through the breach in the wall that was caused by the bomb.

Vocabulary word:  Riveted
 The whole class was so riveted by their teacher's fascinating speech that they didn't even hear the bell ring.

Vocabulary word: Vigil
The mother was very sleepy as she had to keep a constant vigil over her baby girl even at night.

10th of January: Homework: Camp Harmony

Literary Focus: Literary Skills: Point of View
Question 9: Extend "Camp Harmony" is told from the first-person point of view - that is, using the word "I". What other information might a third-person account include that Sone's cannot?

The story "Camp Harmony", if told from the third person perspective, might include information that Sone wouldn't know herself. The story might also include opinions, feelings and thought of other characters and not just the author's. That way, we'll be able to understand the story not just through Sone's eyes, which sometimes can be an unreliable source.

A statue to commemorate Terry Fox

The moment Susan stepped into the mansion, she was mesmerized by how beautiful everything looked. A butler stoically led Susan through the great halls of the mansion. As she followed along, Susan spotted a portrait of an old man. This was probably to commemorate the late master of the mansion, she thought. This man was a part of diplomatic corps but fell ill a few weeks ago. Susan was a surgeon that tried to save this old man's life but as she failed, she came here visit his son, his only relative. Impeccably dressed maids, who were cleaning the house, glanced in Susan's direction. The butler finally stopped and opened a door. Susan looked around the room. As she looked down on the floor, she saw blood. She traced the blood to the corpse. The corpse resembled the old man in the portrait. Was this his son? Was he dead? Susan was petrified. Sure she saw a lot of blood before, but she never saw a crime. The butler that stood next to her started shouting. Maids ran into the room but didn't touch the corps. The beautiful mansion turned chaotic. After a few seconds of pure horror, Susan decided to use all her acquisition as a surgeon to see if she could still save the man. The police came a little bit later. They wanted all the staff out of the mansion but all of them refused in the same manner. It was almost like they were mimicking each other. The police tried to negotiate with the staff, telling them that the accommodations won't be that bad but the more they said, the more dissuaded the staff looked.
